Every morning, Tess rolled her flower cart through the botanical maze, patting her bonnet to make the daisy petals bob. She wanted the quiet seed parade to hear something cheerful before the gardeners opened the glass gates. The paths smelled like wet soil and mint, but the seed pods only clicked, click-click, in their sleepy brown shells.
One day, a striped beetle popped from the biggest daisy and blew a trumpet no larger than a thorn. “March with me!” he squeaked. Because of that, Tess bounced after him under arching leaves, and every bud on her bonnet began to tap like tiny drums. Because of THAT, the seed pods sprang open too soon, sending fluff, bells, and peppery purple dust whirling through the maze.
At last Tess clapped both hands over the beetle’s trumpet, not to stop the music, but to make it puff louder through her fingers. The sound rolled out warm and brassy, and every gardener, snail, and seedling joined the parade. If you spot the daisy sitting highest on her bonnet, keep its secret: that is where the thorn-trumpet first went click-click.
