🎨 How to color it

Color the center sun lemon yellow, the jagged rays in alternating tangerine and gold, the orbit bands deep indigo, and the two angular comets icy turquoise. Use sharp colored pencils for the many thin ray points and star corners, turning the page as you work around the circle. Try fading the orbit bands from violet near the sun to navy at the edges so the comets look like they are racing through a tunnel of space.

The story behind this coloring page

Zadie Finds the Inside Sun — The comet arcade rang like a pocketful of keys as Zadie kicked her silver sled onto the first orbit lane. Read the full story →

The comet arcade rang like a pocketful of keys as Zadie kicked her silver sled onto the first orbit lane. She wanted to ride one perfect loop around the star wheel before the lane lights changed, so she leaned into the curve, boots buzzing, scarf snapping behind her like a tiny flag. Stars clicked past in bright corners. The air smelled cold, like metal and mint.

Round and round she flew, faster than the tally-beads could count. Two crystal comets streaked above and below, throwing blue sparks across the lanes. Zadie laughed so hard her helmet fogged. “One more curve!” she called, and the empty sun at the middle shone plain and white, as if it were only waiting its turn.

Then her sled’s shadow slid across that white circle, and surprise burst open: pale lines appeared inside it, not painted on top, but hidden underneath, a secret route glowing from the center outward. The star wheel was not a finish line at all. It was a map for the next arcade, tucked where nobody thought to look. If you trace the sharpest rays back to the middle, can you find where Zadie’s next silver loop begins?
