At the garden gate, Vesper kept a circle of leaves trimmed so the night wind could pass through without snagging. One rosehip had dropped beyond the safe inside rim, bright as a coal in the damp grass, and she wanted it back before the bats returned from the orchard. She slipped under the iron ring, brushing her sleeve against cold ivy and giving one small bead from her cuff to a thorn that would not let go.
The rosehip was not lost. It had rolled into a hollow in the old vine frame, where nobody had ever thought to look, and there it rested beside a folded scrap soft with dust. Vesper opened it and smelled rain, petals, and the faint peppery scent of bat wings. The note said, “Leave the middle open. We come home by the empty place.”
She carried back the rosehip, but set it among the leaves instead of pocketing it. The wreath no longer felt like her work to guard; it felt like a doorway that had remembered her name. Under the iron ring, the night wind passed through without snagging.
