🎨 How to color it

Layer the ghost’s outer shape in pearly lavender, the candle flames in marigold and amber, the tiny bats in deep plum, and the web-filled corners in smoky gray. Use sharp colored pencils for the narrow curls, dots, and triangular web sections, turning the page often so each tiny shape stays crisp. For a secret Halloween glow, shade warm yellow halos around the candles and let the ghost’s center fade into cool blue-violet shadows.

Before ghosts carried candlelight, the Pattern Hall was lit only by moon threads stitched through the ceiling, thin as spider silk and cold enough to taste like tin. Elowen came there each October with a silver thimble in her pocket, though everyone thought it was plain; inside it lived the last warm shine from her human birthday cake, a joy she had kept private for a hundred quiet years.

That night, the hall’s curled walls, bat rafters, and webbed arches went dark one by one. The little ghostlets bumped softly into one another, their laughter turning small. Elowen pressed the thimble to her sheet and heard it hum, not with a candle’s crackle but with all the voices that had once sung for her. She lifted it high. “Take some,” she whispered.

The glow leapt into every waiting wick, gold on wax, gold in the air, gold enough to make the bats wheel in delighted loops. Elowen expected the thimble to empty, but the more light she gave away, the brighter it rang. Ever since, ghosts carry candlelight because one hidden happiness became too large to keep in a pocket, thin as spider silk and warm as cake.
