Every evening, Dorian pressed his ear to the archive loft’s cold beams and recorded the snow’s gossip: chimney sighs, boot squeaks, one scandalous hiccup from a weather vane. He never climbed the tall ladder to the antler shelves, where retired crowns hung like carved chandeliers. Then one night a rude little whistle came from his own rack—fwip!—and blew frost dust straight into his nose.
Because of that, Dorian sneezed so hard the ink froze in loops. Because of that, the loft cat accused the moon of vandalism, and Dorian, blushing under both ears, finally climbed. Inside the hollow tip nobody ever dusted, he found a brass pea-whistle tied to a note: FOR THE FIRST BRAVE NOSY ONE. He blew it once. Every silent snowflake outside answered with a tiny fwip, and Dorian wrote his first rumor from above.
