Parrots have zygodactyl feet, which means two toes point forward and two point backward; that helps them grip branches and hold food like a tiny hand. Their strong, curved beaks can crack seeds and nuts, but they also use them for climbing. Many parrots can copy sounds they hear, and African gray parrots are especially famous for impressive vocal mimicry. The hyacinth macaw of South America is the largest flying parrot, reaching about 3.3 feet from head to tail. Not every parrot is tropical, either: the kea lives in the mountains of New Zealand and is known for its curious, problem-solving behavior.
Coloring tips
A classic parrot palette is wonderfully bold: emerald green bodies, scarlet red heads or chests, cobalt blue wing tips, golden yellow patches, orange beaks on some species, and white or pale gray eye rings. For feathered areas, color in the direction the feathers grow, using short strokes on the head and longer strokes down the wings and tail. Layer a darker shade along the edges of each feather to make the bird look textured instead of flat.
