Under the fern roof, a small tap-tap came from inside Orla’s egg. She wanted to hear the soft song that hummed through the nest at sunrise, but the shell held tight. Tap-tap. The vines smelled damp and sweet, and a round silver beetle rolled out from under a leaf. “Wait for the third hush,” it whispered.
Orla stopped pecking. First came the wind hush. Then came the leaf hush. At last came a tiny hush from her own heart. Crack! The top of the egg lifted and settled on her head like a little crown. The nest-song rang clear: churrr, chee, churrr. Ever since, new parrot chicks keep a bit of shell on top so they can hear the secret before they shout hello. Can you spot Orla’s crown waiting in the leaves?
