Every evening, Orin tucked a dry heart-shaped leaf under his wing before he and Vela counted the sleepy clicks of beetles in the vine arch. The leaf looked ordinary, but it carried the last warm smell of the old tree where they had hatched, and Orin wanted its memory to stay quiet and safe.
Until one evening, the leaf began to hum against his feathers like a tiny green drum. Because of that, Orin climbed after the sound instead of counting beetles, and Vela followed, whispering, “What is it hearing?” Because of THAT, the vines answered with soft notes, one flower at a time, until the whole arbor trembled with a song neither parrot had sung.
At last, Orin touched his beak to Vela’s and held the leaf between them. The hum became two voices, then many: old nests, first rain, far branches calling. If you find the heart leaf above them, you may wonder what memory it is humming now, under one quiet wing.
