🎨 How to color it

Color the rose petals in coral pink, the butterfly wings in lavender and teal, the smiling sun in golden yellow, and the daisies with white petals and orange centers. Use sharp colored pencils for the butterfly’s narrow wing sections and the rose’s curled inner petals, then switch to broader strokes for the tall grass. Try making the rose darker near the center and lighter on the outer petals, as if the sun is warming it from the upper left.

Every day before the road warmed, Tess tapped her spoon on the fence rail so the bees, beetles, and one speckled butterfly could find the wildflower verge by sound. Ting, ting, ting—the notes slipped through dewy grass and smelled of mint and dust. She wanted the whole meadow to wake together.

Until one day, the big rose gave no scent at all. Because of that, the butterfly circled low instead of landing, and the bees bumbled past in puzzled zigzags. Because of that, Tess leaned close and heard a tiny hum where nobody had thought to listen: inside the rose’s tight green base, tucked under the lowest petal, a clear seed rang like a bell.

“Share it,” whispered Tess. She touched the stem, and the hidden seed answered every wingbeat with silver music. Finally the insects came back, not one by one, but in a bright, buzzing crowd, carrying the sound from flower to flower. Next time you see the butterfly beside the rose, can you find where the meadow’s biggest joy began?
