Every afternoon, Junia cut scraps from old banner cloth, painted tiny hearts on them, and tucked them into her belt pouch with a clack of wooden buttons. She wanted to build the fastest castle game anyone had ever played: Castle Dash, with points for spotting flowers, towers, birds, and secret stones before the supper horn. Until one day, a gust whooshed through the gate and snatched her handmade tokens into the air.
Because of that, Junia raced along the curving path, spear tapping tap-tap on the stones, calling, “First player to save the pieces wins!” Because of that, the bakers, pages, and stable twins joined in, leaping over puddles and laughing as tokens fluttered onto window boxes and vines that smelled like green rain. One heart-token landed high on the balcony rail, just out of reach.
Finally, Junia tied her spear to a broom handle, hooked the token down, and pinned it to her shield as the first official badge of Castle Dash. The game had rules, teams, and a finish line because her own hands had made it real. Next time you see the smiling guard by the flowered gate, can you find the place where the first badge clacked like a wooden button?
