Every afternoon, Junie painted letters for the park’s Earth Day sign while the wind clicked leaves together like tiny spoons. She wanted the path clean before the morning parade, so she tucked scraps into her bucket: paper, bottle caps, two cans that smelled like old lemonade.
Until one can hummed.
Because of that, Junie held it to her ear instead of tossing it away. Because of that, the hum became a whispery map: not words, but ticks and shivers pointing past the daisies, around the recycling bin, and under a flat piece of paper nobody had bothered to lift. Beneath it lay a seed packet, damp but unbroken, labeled PRAIRIE STARS.
By sunset, Junie planted the seeds along the bend in the path. “You were hiding a sky,” she told the can. Next time you spot the crumpled cans near the path, can you imagine one quietly humming Junie’s runaway curiosity back to the daisies?
