High in the canopy archive, between leaves that smelled of rain and old paper, Pippa tapped one claw on the calling branch. Tonight she wanted to announce the next book for the first time. The stack below her leaned like a sleepy tower, and every title seemed to clear its throat.
She opened the biggest volume. Its pages whispered shuff-shuff, and Pippa drew a brave breath. Before she could hoot, a tiny voice squeaked from the margin, “Pardon me, you’re standing on my comma.” Out popped a footnote wearing a leaf for a hat. It bowed, sneezed ink, and the index began giggling in perfect alphabetical order.
Pippa blinked, then gave the smallest proper shelf-call she could. “Book C-Three, please giggle softly.” The footnote saluted. The leaves rustled, the books settled, and Pippa’s voice felt warm instead of wobbly. Next time you see her holding that open book, check the margins—one comma may still be laughing.
