🎨 How to color it

Color the owl soft cocoa brown, the tall balloon cherry red, the striped party hat sunny yellow and teal, and the cupcake frosting strawberry pink. Use chunky crayons or markers for the owl’s big belly, balloon, and frosting, then switch to a sharper crayon tip for the tiny stars and confetti bits. Try making the candle flame orange in the middle and yellow around the edge so it looks like it is glowing for the owl’s party.

Under the warm roof tiles, Bixby carried a tiny bent match in his party hat. He wanted one soft flame for his cupcake candle before the moon climbed over the chimney. The match had come from his first nest box, and he kept it wrapped in ribbon. “Not yet,” whispered the cloud, who smelled like rain.

Bixby waited while confetti tick-tick-ticked on the floor and his red balloon bobbed beside his wing. At last, the night grew still. He touched the match to the candle, and its little light stood up, calm and gold. One star leaned close to borrow the glow. Ever since, birthday candles shine brightest after patient waiting—can you spot the one that kept Bixby’s soft flame?
