Every evening, after the lantern beetles clicked on, Zadie snipped paper scraps into hearts for the craft roost’s midnight swap. She wanted to bring a garland made by her own claws, not another store-bought ribbon from the magpie cart. Snip-snip, fold-fold, she worked while cedar shavings tickled her beak—until one day her acorn cap of berry glue vanished.

Because of that, the hearts slid off the vine and plopped into the feather bin. Because of THAT, a tiny moth named Grimp marched through the sticky mess wearing three pink hearts like armor. “I am not your glue,” he squeaked. Zadie checked the shelf, the moss basket, even under her foot feathers. Nothing. Then her half-finished center heart gave a suspicious squelch.

Inside it, warm and wobbly, hid the missing glue cap, sealed in by Zadie’s very first fold. She laughed so hard the garland shook. Finally, she pressed every heart by claw, added flowers, leaves, and one proud word in the middle.
