🎨 How to color it

Try a deep chestnut brown for the beetle’s wing covers, amber on the raised antennae, moss green leaves, and pale gray twigs. Use sharp colored pencils for the beetle’s many leg joints and shell seams, then switch to light side-strokes inside the larger leaf shapes. Add a tiny gold highlight along each curved wing cover so the beetle looks like it just caught a beam of forest light.

Under the old beech roots, Sable polished a plain glass button with the edge of a fallen leaf. She wanted to place it in the exact patch of moonlight her great-aunt had marked with three scratches on a twig. The forest floor smelled of damp bark and mushrooms, and every few minutes a leaf ticked down like a slow clock.

Sable waited while pill bugs rolled past and a cricket tuned one silver note. The button looked like nothing special—round, cloudy, and cool against her feet—but she kept turning it toward the pale sky. “Not yet,” she whispered when the moon slid behind a branch. Then the light finally poured through the leaves, and the button filled with tiny bright dots.

They were not scratches after all. They were stars, bent small inside the glass, showing where the night beetles would rise from their burrows to sip dew. Sable set the button on the marked twig, and the whole forest floor seemed to breathe softer. If you find the plainest round thing among the leaves, wait with Sable; it may be holding a sky.
