🎨 How to color it

Color the grasshopper spring green with lemon-yellow belly bands, the big leaf a deep leaf green, and the small flowers white with golden centers. Use chunky crayons or markers for the grasshopper’s long legs and wide leaf, then try thinner pencil lines for the many tall grass blades. For a fun secret-meadow look, make the background grasses two different greens so the smiling grasshopper pops forward.

The story behind this coloring page

Junie’s Jumping Question — Beside the tickle-noisy creek, Junie pressed her short front feet into the mud and invented a game called What’s Past That? Read the full story →

Beside the tickle-noisy creek, Junie pressed her short front feet into the mud and invented a game called What’s Past That? She would point her feelers at something—leaf, reed, pebble—then jump to see the answer. But the meadow grass stood taller than her head, swish-swish, hiding every clue.

“Psst, I need a bigger question,” Junie whispered. She bent her back legs like two green bows and sprang over a silver leaf. Up high, she saw flowers, clouds, and the creek curling away like a ribbon. The other grasshoppers tried it and gasped. Ever since, grasshoppers keep those long jumping legs, because curiosity still asks, What’s past that? Next time you spot one in the grass, what do you think it is trying to see?
