Every day, Tula counted the swoosh of the reef current with all eight arms. She wanted the big rush that carried shells, leaves, and silver fish past the rocks, but the water only went swish... swish... slow. One morning, a spotted starfish tumbled in, dizzy and dusty with sand. “Wait for the third warm ripple,” it whispered, smelling like salt and sunlit stone.
Because of that, Tula tucked her arms under a ledge and did not chase the first splash. Because of that, she also missed the second splash, even though it tugged her curls and made the coral click-click. Then came a warm ripple, a warmer ripple, and the warmest WHOOOSH of all. Tula spread her arms and sailed through pink heart bubbles past the grinning starfish. Next time you spot those floating hearts, can you guess which ripple finally arrived?
