Every evening, Rafi counted the flat desert tiles from the safe edge of camp: one, two, three. The stones held the day’s warmth, and the air smelled dusty and sweet. He wanted to tap the farthest tile before the moon reached the tall rock, but his knees always stopped at three.
Until one day, a tiny star blinked twice and went dark. Because of that, Rafi stepped to tile four, then five, hearing click-click under his sandals. Because of that, the quiet ground answered with a soft blue shine from a plain hexagon nobody ever counted.
