Between the tall trees, Pip tiptoed along the curvy path with three crunchy oat crumbs in his pocket. He had made himself a challenge: hide one tiny snack in each patch of sunshine without any squirrel, jay, or beetle seeing him. The forest smelled like pine needles and damp leaves, and the sunbeams made bright stripes on his shoes.
Plip! One crumb landed by a fern. Plop! One balanced on a smooth rock. Pip was saving the last when a deer stepped into the light and flicked one ear. Instead of eating the crumb, she nudged it toward a shy chipmunk under the leaves. “Hey, that’s my trick,” Pip whispered, giggling.
