🎨 How to color it

Color the mountain peaks slate gray with snowy white ridges, the lake a clear blue, the cattails warm brown, and the pines deep evergreen. Use sharp colored pencils for the thin cattail stems and mountain cracks, then switch to light side-strokes for the wide water reflections. Try making the reflected peaks a softer, paler version of the real mountains so the lake feels glassy and still.

At the edge of a highland lake, where cattails clicked like tiny wooden spoons, Vera invented a game called Second Sky. She would take one step for every thing the water could hold: one cloud, one pine, one white mountain ridge. The wet stones looked slick as seal backs, and her first step made her stomach hop.

The lake kept accepting pieces of the world without a splash. Vera counted the brown cattails, the round shore rocks, the long quiet clouds, and the jagged peaks folded upside down in blue. With each whisper of “one more,” her shoes moved nearer until the water breathed cold air against her toes.

Then a pale feather drifted across the surface and broke every mountain into silver scraps. Vera stopped counting. The game had changed: the lake was not copying the sky; it was making a second one, soft enough for feathers to travel through. “Your turn,” she whispered, and let her reflection step bravely beside her. Next time you see the cattails at the shore, see if you can find where Second Sky begins.
