Under the winter hall rafters, Quin counted the ruby cranberries on his garland and spotted a gap no bigger than a wink. He wanted one frost-thread to tie it shut before the night bell rang. The hall smelled of pine sap and orange peel, and everyone below was too busy polishing lanterns to notice a cranberry bead scooting along the high rope.
Quin rolled past prickly needles, paid a small price when a pine cone snagged his shine, and squeezed behind the biggest citrus slice. There, where nobody thought to look, was a secret pocket of golden peel curls, still warm from sun. A shivering snow-moth hid inside. “Take it,” Quin whispered, leaving the frost-thread and pushing the peel curls toward her.
He came back with pine dust on his cheek and no perfect knot, but the gap held anyway; the snow-moth had woven it closed with a thread that sparkled softly. If you follow the cranberry curve, can you spot the place where generosity nobody was watching became part of the garland?
