🎨 How to color it

Color the shark a soft blue-gray, the sailor hat crisp white with navy trim, the compass golden yellow, and the seaweed two fresh greens. Use sharp colored pencils for the many bubbles, leaf veins, coral tips, and tiny fish goggles so the small shapes stay clear. Try a pale turquoise wash behind the shark, then add a few silver bubbles around the compass as if it is catching underwater light.

The story behind this coloring page

The Compass Under Bubbles — The compass on Tobin’s neck ticked like a tiny crab tap-tap-tapping a shell. Read the full story →

The compass on Tobin’s neck ticked like a tiny crab tap-tap-tapping a shell. He wanted to find the cool blue current before the reef garden grew too warm, so he slipped out from his favorite kelp arch, past frilly coral and sleepy sand-snails. The water smelled salty-sweet with crushed sea grass. A parade of bubbles rose beside him, round and shiny as moon buttons, but every one popped before he could ask it the way.

At the tall weed gate, his sailor hat snagged on a curling leaf. Tobin tugged free and left one neat blue stripe behind, waving like a ribbon. “I’ll bring you back,” he whispered. Then his compass stopped ticking and began to hum. Not ahead. Not down. Up—inside a ring of bubbles nobody ever bothered to watch.

Tobin nudged the largest bubble with his nose. It did not pop. Inside spun a tiny silver seed, making cold light. When it touched the water, a soft current opened, cool as shade under a shell. Tobin rode it home, changed from a finder of paths into a keeper of gentle surprises. Next time you spot the bubbles around his compass, can you tell which one is still hiding the tap-tap-tap?
