🎨 How to color it

Color the mermaid’s tail seafoam green, her flowing hair coral pink, the shell crown pearly peach, and the lighthouse stripes bright red. Use sharp colored pencils for the small tail scales, shell ridges, fish, and lily petals, then fill the wide water areas with smooth marker strokes. Try a golden glow around the smiling sun and let it fade into pale blue ripples near the water lilies.

Before the gulls began their rackety breakfast, Maris slipped three cooling pearls into her shell crown and swished across the lighthouse lagoon. She wanted to tuck them beside the lily pads before the hottest bell, so any tired swimmer could borrow a little chill. The water smelled of salt and lotus roots, and tiny fish flashed like tossed coins around her tail.

She reached the smooth turtle rocks and placed one pearl in each sunny hollow. Plink. Plink. Plink. Then the nearest rock gave a slow, warm hum. Not a rock at all—three old sea turtles opened mossy eyes, their shells polished by years of naps. “We carry shade where shade is needed,” one rumbled, and the pearls rolled into grooves on their backs like stars finding pockets.

Maris laughed so hard bubbles popped around her cheeks. The turtles paddled off in three directions: one toward the lighthouse steps, one toward the palm-shadowed shore, one toward the far lilies where dragonflies clicked their wings. No one saw who had given the coolness away, but all afternoon the lagoon felt kinder. If you visit before the gulls begin their rackety breakfast, you might spot the turtle rocks still wearing a secret shine.
