Every morning, Kiri tapped the dirt path with one foot and led her three chicks past the same daisy, the same tulip, and the same round pebble. She had set herself a challenge: take three new turns before snack time and still bring everyone home before the clouds finished smiling.
One day, a silver grass seed zipped past her beak, whistling like a tiny kettle. Kiri darted after it, and the chicks peep-peep-peeped behind her through cool clover and tickly stems. Because of that, they found a path that curved under giant flowers. Because of that, the seed spun into a hollow weed stalk and made the whole hill hum.
“Follow the buzz!” Kiri called. At last, she poked the stalk loose, and warm wind puffed through it like a flute, pointing straight back to their pebble. Next time you spot the three chicks on the trail, see if you can guess which turn began with that whistling seed.
