Every evening, Vesper counted lily pads by tapping them with one toe, neat as a metronome, while the pond smelled of mud and lotus pepper. Until one day he invented Splash-Library: each pad had to answer with a different ploop, plip, or disgraceful blorp. Because of that, the frogs demanded library cards; because of that, the dragonflies began shushing everyone in glittering loops. Finally, Vesper raised his beak and conducted the racket into a tune so ridiculous the moon seemed to snort. The joy was too large to perch on one leg, so he gave every lily pad a name and tapped the first plip again.
