Under the leaf roof, Pip tapped the same twig every morning: tik, tik, tik. He wanted one red whisper berry for his empty breakfast shell, but all the berries near his nest were green and hard.
So Pip hopped past the curly vines and the pink flower, deeper into the thicket where the air smelled damp and sweet. A thorn tugged one soft feather from his tail. “That’s a fair trade,” Pip peeped. Then he heard a tiny rattle inside the branch. Not a bug. Not rain. Pip pecked once, and out rolled a red berry with a folded leaf tucked behind it.
