Under the old oak’s warm, woody roof, Ori tapped one claw, then two, then three. He had set himself a midnight challenge: hear three star-songs before the moon slipped behind the highest branch. The first song came easy, a silver ping above the leaves. For the second, Ori stepped from his hollow and crossed a scratchy limb, where cold dew soaked his toes and a beetle ticked like a tiny clock.

The third star stayed quiet. Ori waited near the end of the branch while the woods breathed moss and rain. “I can wait softer,” he whispered. His wings drooped, but he did not hurry the sky. At last, the moon hummed a low yellow note, and the third star answered, clear as a bell in a teacup.

Ori carried the three small songs home inside his chest. He was sleepier than before, and somehow larger, too. Next time you notice his round eyes beneath the smiling moon, keep still for a moment—maybe you’ll hear one claw, then two, then three.
