Under the loose towel fold, Nolo kept a dull silver button no bigger than a pea. He rubbed it with his feelers every night, hoping it would shine enough to mark his doorway so he could always find his way back through the dark, soap-scented bathroom.
One night, the towel was lifted away, and cold air rushed over the tiles. Nolo tucked the button under his belly and stepped out. Drip. Drip. The floor smelled of mint soap and rain from the open window. His feet slipped on a wet square, and the button skittered ahead, stopping beside a deep line of grout. To reach it, Nolo crossed three bright puddles and left behind a tiny scale from his tail, silver as dust.
At the crack, a young springtail peeked out. “That shine belongs here,” she whispered. Nolo nudged the button into the grout, where it caught the bathroom night-light and glowed like a small moon. When he crawled back, he did not need the towel fold to tell him home; the cool tiles, the minty air, and that waiting glimmer knew him. Next time you see the silver button shine between the squares, you’ll know Nolo found his way by drip, drip.
