Under the lantern leaves, Nori pressed berry juice onto a scrap of petal. She wanted to make a flutter trail all by herself before the fireflies rang their tiny bells. Dot, dot, swish—the petal smelled sweet and sticky, but the marks came out wobbly circles.
Nori folded the petal with her little feet and snipped it with a grass blade. When she opened it, a heart popped free. “I made one!” she whispered. She tied it to her wings, then another, then another, until her flight left soft heart shapes in the warm air. Ever since, love bugs carry handmade hearts on their wings and sprinkle them behind them under the lantern leaves.
