🎨 How to color it

Color the caterpillar spring green, the bitten apple bright red, the curled leaf golden yellow, and the tall grass fresh lime. Use chunky crayons or washable markers for the caterpillar’s big round body sections, and don’t worry if little hands color over a few legs. Try making each body bump a slightly different green so the caterpillar looks like it is wiggling through the grass.

Every day, Nico tapped a curled leaf—pat-pat, pat-pat—to start the orchard band. Beetles clicked, grasshoppers scraped, and the grass smelled sharp and sunny. But one day, the leaf only made a sad flop. A big wind had filled it with mud.

Because of that, Nico hurried down the path to find a new drum. Because of that, he bumped a bitten apple and heard, thump-a-rum! Inside the bite hole sat three shiny apple seeds, rattling like tiny bells. “Everybody, listen!” Nico called. He rolled the apple with all his feet, and the orchard burst into music too big to keep quiet. If you spot that apple, can you imagine the seeds going thump-a-rum again?
