Under the coop’s slanted roof, Marnie tiptoed across the cool wooden planks with three silver oat cakes balanced in her beak. The moon parade would pass the walkway soon, and she wanted every late traveler to find a snack without knowing who left it. Scritch-scratch went her claws. Whish-whish went the straw as she tucked one cake by the hay box, one beside a grass tuft, and one near the gate.
A tiny snore puffed from under her lifted wing. Marnie froze, feathers tickling her own cheek. Pip, the smallest chick, had curled into the warm pocket there—but beside him sparkled a secret row of star seeds, hidden in the soft down where nobody ever thought to look. “For the parade,” Pip mumbled, still asleep.
Marnie scattered the seeds around the cakes, and each one blinked like a friendly lantern. When the moon parade clucked past, nobody saw the givers, only the glowing path. If you peek under Marnie’s wing, you might catch the last silver oat cake and hear scritch-scratch in the cool wooden planks.
