🎨 How to color it

Try sea-glass green for the mermaid’s tail, lavender and pale gold for her butterfly wings, and rosy pink for the lotus flowers and shell hairpieces. Use sharp colored pencils on the tail scales, wing veins, willow leaves, and swirling water lines so the small repeating shapes stay crisp. For a secret glow, shade the pond from turquoise near her hand to deep blue around the lily pads, with silver stars tucked between the bubbles.

Under the willow’s long green whisper, Veyra measured her waist with a strip of pond grass and frowned. She wanted a sash for the Night-Current Dance, not one traded from pearl merchants, but one made by her own fingers. The trouble was thread: every moon-silk strand in her pouch had snapped like wet hair. So she slipped from her warm lily hollow and swam toward the reed bank, where the mud smelled sharp and the cattails clicked in the breeze.

A bramble of water thorns caught her fin, and she gave three of her prettiest tail scales to a nibbling stone crab for help. “Don’t tell the minnows,” she whispered. Past the flat rock, behind the cattails nobody visited because they only looked like cattails, she found a hollow in the old willow root. Inside sat a tiny loom, strung with silver root-hairs and one note carved on bark: FOR HANDS THAT TRY.

Veyra worked until her fingers tingled and the pond rings shivered around her. The sash came out crooked, then stronger, then shining with little lily knots she had invented herself. When she tied it on, she did not hurry back the same. She carried mud on her elbows, pride in her chest, and a secret from the willow’s long green whisper—can you spot where the reeds kept it hidden?
