🎨 How to color it

Color the fox rusty orange with a cream chest and tail tip, make the pine trunks warm brown, and use deep green for the needle branches and shrubs. Use sharp colored pencils for the fox’s fur lines and tiny leaves, then switch to light marker strokes for the tall, straight tree trunks. Try a pale blue-to-lavender fade between the trees so the orange fox feels like a secret glowing in the woods.

Under the warm root of the tallest pine, Tavi kept a dry little den that smelled of needles and sun-baked bark. He wanted one moonberry for breakfast, just one, the kind that popped cold and sweet against his teeth. So he slipped from his cozy hollow and padded into the hush between the trunks, where every twig snap sounded like somebody whispering his name.

The moonberry bush grew beyond the brambles, and the brambles collected a price: three tufts of tail fur and one dignified sneeze. Tavi found no berries at all. Only three flat leaves lay on the path, neat as if a squirrel had set them there. “That’s suspicious,” he murmured, and nudged them aside.

Beneath the leaves waited a tiny wooden whistle, carved like a curled fox. Tavi blew once. A bright trill bounced up the pine trunks, and from behind every shrub came fox kits, jays, mice, and one beetle wearing pollen like gold dust. Someone had hidden a party call where nobody ever looked—on the ground. Tavi raced home with the whistle instead of a berry, too full of joy to keep it quiet; next time you spot those three leaves by his paws, you’ll know the secret is still humming under the tallest pine.
