🎨 How to color it

Shade the diplodocus bones in warm ivory, the rib shadows in soft gray, the fossil slab in sandy tan, and the loose bones in pale cream. Use sharp colored pencils for the many ribs, tail segments, and neck bones, working slowly along each narrow space so the skeleton stays clear. Add a faint blue-gray museum shadow behind the long tail curve to make the white bones stand out.

Under the pale morning haze, Kavo nosed the gravel beside the fossil ridge, searching for one smooth whistle-stone to hang near his sleeping hollow. The ridge clicked in the wind—tik, tik, tik—where old bones lay half-buried in sun-baked clay. Kavo liked his fern nook, cool and sweet-smelling, but every good whistle-stone waited beyond it. He stepped out, scraping his knee on a splintery root and losing two mouthfuls of breakfast to a bold little lizard.

At the far end of the ridge, a flat stone hummed when the wind slipped under it. Kavo pushed with his chin. Dust puffed up, dry as chalk. Under the slab was no whistle-stone at all, but a pocket of hard black seeds tucked between forgotten bones. “Who hid you here?” he whispered. Then he heard the brittle rattle of thirsty seedpods in the cracked garden below.

Kavo carried the seeds back one cheekful at a time, though grit stuck to his tongue and nobody watched from the fern shadows. By dusk, the first seeds rested in damp mud near the spring seep. He kept just one small seed shell; when the wind touched it, it gave a tiny tik, tik, tik. If you search the bone slab, can you spot the place where Kavo’s secret might have been waiting?
