🎨 How to color it

Give the mermaid’s tail turquoise scales with a lilac fin, color the seahorse sunny yellow with coral-orange stripes, and make the round pearl pale pink. Use sharp colored pencils for the small tail scales, seahorse bands, and tiny bubbles, then switch to broader strokes for the tall seaweed and coral tubes. Try a secret glow by shading a faint blue halo around the pearl and adding one matching blue stripe on the seahorse’s curled tail.

Under the quiet sponge arches, Oona set herself a dare: follow three flashes from the tide pearl and return before the bell coral rang. She tucked the pearl into her palm and slipped away from her cozy eelgrass hammock, past seaweed that brushed her arms like wet ribbons. Flash one winked left. Flash two winked deeper. At the third flash, a striped seahorse blocked the narrow path, clicking softly. “Toll for the maze,” he said.

Oona had brought no coins, only the bright scale-ribbon tied around her wrist. She untied it, and the water felt colder where it had been. The seahorse took the ribbon, then nudged the pearl with his snout. Inside its shine, tiny letters curled like smoke: NOT LOST—LOOK UP.

Above them, the bell coral held her ribbon, woven into a new path marker for anyone who wandered too far. Oona laughed, took back the pearl, and hurried home with a secret map in her head. If you trace the bubbles around the seahorse next time, can you guess which way the pearl blinked first?
