🎨 How to color it

Try sea-glass teal for the mermaid’s tail, coral pink for her shell top, sandy beige for the pebble rocks, and olive green for the tall kelp fronds. Use sharp colored pencils on the many tail scales and hair strands, coloring small sections at a time so the fine lines stay crisp. Add a gentle blue-to-white wash in the open water behind her so the tiny fish look like they are crossing a bright current.

The story behind this coloring page

Between the tall kelp leaves, Aurelia carried a pouch of silver seeds that clicked softly like rain on shells. She tucked one seed at the foot of each plant, then smoothed sand over it with her palm. No one had asked her to tend the nursery; the reef fish were busy chasing glitter, and the crabs preferred the sunny stones. Still, the young kelp smelled clean and peppery, and Aurelia liked knowing tomorrow’s shade began with a tiny thing.

She drifted past rounded pebbles, counting spaces by the sway of the fronds. A small school of fish slipped after her, nibbling at bubbles. “Not snacks,” Aurelia whispered, and tucked the last seed where two roots crossed. The water there felt warmer, as if the sand were holding its breath.

Then the plainest pebble in the garden gave a silver blink. Aurelia lifted it and found a hollow underneath, lined with mother-of-pearl. Inside rested dozens of polished seeds, already sorted by size, left by some careful hand—or fin—before hers. The fish circled close, flashing like little lanterns.

Aurelia poured her empty pouch beside the hidden store and did not take a single one. She placed the pebble back so the nursery could keep its secret, then swam on through the clean, peppery kelp; if you follow the tiny fish, you might spot the ordinary stone that holds tomorrow’s shade.
