🎨 How to color it

Give the mermaid’s tail a turquoise green, her long hair a sandy gold, the sunset a warm peach, and the shoreline rocks a soft gray. Use sharp colored pencils for the small tail scales and hair strands, then switch to wider side-strokes for the open sky and waves. Try making the water darker near the front rocks and lighter around the sun’s reflection, as if the whole sea is glowing behind her.

The first breeze of evening smelled like salt and warm stone when Kaia climbed onto the high shore rock with her shell comb in one hand. She had set herself a challenge: name seven colors in the sunset before the last bright edge of the sun slipped under the water. Gold was easy. Peach came next. Then coral, rose, and a thin stripe of lemon flashed across the waves. Her heart beat quick as gulls cried over the foam. “Two more,” she whispered, running the comb through her wind-tangled hair.

Each stroke made a tiny shhhk, shhhk sound, and the sea below seemed to answer with silver lines. Kaia leaned forward. The colors were not only in the sky. They were hiding in the wave tops, in the wet rock, even in the spaces between her hair strands. Violet winked under one curl. Blue-green slid along her tail like a secret path.

Then the twist came with a splash of laughter: a school of tiny glassfish had gathered beneath her, copying every comb stroke in shining zigzags. Kaia grinned and brushed faster, brave enough now to count out loud while the fish painted with her. Next time you notice the sunset behind her, see if you can spot the color that began with one small shhhk on the high shore rock.
