Behind the lantern reef, where bubbles ticked like secret clocks, Rina pinched one skinny candle from her own birthday cake. She only wanted eight bright flames before the sea choir arrived, and seven was a disaster if you asked her. But from the black crack under the old coral steps came a sneeze—pffft!—and a baby lanternfish whispered, “Our glow went out.”
Rina slipped past the balloon ropes and swam into the crack with cake frosting still sweet on her fingers. The stone scraped one scale loose, and cold water nipped her ears. She tucked the little candle into a pink shell cup, shielded it with both hands, and let its flame kiss the lanternfish’s dark pebble-lamp. One by one, silver dots blinked awake where nobody at the party could see.
When Rina returned, the choir was already humming, low and fizzy. Her cake had only seven candles, but beyond the coral, a whole hidden nursery twinkled back at her. She did not tell anyone why she smiled before making her wish; next time you spot that candlelit cake, try to guess which flame became a secret clock.
