🎨 How to color it

Color the mermaid’s tail deep teal, her pumpkin shell bright orange, the skull clips bone white, and the thorny kelp arch dark olive. Use sharp colored pencils for the tiny tail scales, necklace bones, bubbles, and thorn leaves, saving broader marker strokes for the long hair and large fin. Try a dusky purple-to-navy background so the orange pumpkin and pale skulls feel like little underwater lanterns.

Under Shadow Reef, Selkie rubbed black pearl dust between her fingers and dared herself to build one festival arch without asking the coral masons for help. The water smelled like rain on stone, and thorn kelp clicked softly as she tied stem to stem with strands of her own combed hair. “Hold still, please,” she whispered, though the kelp kept twitching away from her careful knots.

A lanternfish scout flashed three pale blinks—the parade was near. Selkie’s hands ached, but she pressed a tiny shell charm into the last crossing place, the one she had carved all afternoon until it fit her thumb exactly. The thorn kelp shivered, then leaned inward, leaf to leaf, making a doorway over her head. Bubbles chimed against the points like little bells.

Ever since that evening, thorn kelp grows into arches when it feels patient hands making something meant to welcome others. If you visit Shadow Reef, count the sharp leaves over Selkie’s shoulders and see if her first careful doorway is still holding.
