Every day, Romy practiced for the Pearl Parade in Current Plaza, tossing one smooth pearl from palm to palm while the bands tuned their shell horns. She wanted the parade to start with a sound big enough to make every window-jelly glow, but her pearl only made a soft clink, clink against her bracelets. The plaza smelled of salty kelp garlands and warm sand, and even the sea horses yawned.
Until one day, a gusty current snatched the parade bouquet from the marshal’s cart and spun it straight into Romy’s arms. Because of that, she grabbed at the flying shells and starfish, and her practice pearl rolled into the bouquet’s tight bundle of stems. Because of THAT, the plain pearl bumped something hidden there—click!—and a tiny crab-sized music box sprang open where nobody had thought to look.
“Play it louder!” Romy cried. The box whirred, chimed, and burst into a galloping tune that made heart bubbles pop from the coral arches. Romy held the bouquet high and shared the music down every lane until fish, snails, and shy window-jellies joined the parade. If you ever spot her pearl lifted beside those floating hearts, you’ll know the whole plaza is still clinking, clinking with joy.
