🎨 How to color it

Color the oceans bright turquoise, the continents grassy green, the recycling arrows sunny yellow, and the two cupping leaves deep emerald. Use markers for the wide globe and arrow shapes, then switch to sharp colored pencils for the tiny stars, spiral centers, and map edges. Try a soft blue-to-purple space glow behind the crescent moon so the sprout on top feels extra fresh.

Under a sleepy crescent moon, Sorrel rubbed the smooth green button in her pocket and listened to the recycling bins clink below the apartment. She wanted one spoonful of real soil for the button, because Dad used to call it “a seed that forgot its job.” The window box held only dry crumbs, so Sorrel climbed to the rooftop garden, where the air smelled like rain on warm brick.

Past silver vents and sleeping pigeons, she found a compost barrel humming with tiny beetle clicks. The lid was stuck. Sorrel tugged until her palms stung, then traded her last oat cookie to a bold squirrel who shoved the latch with both paws. “Fair deal,” Sorrel whispered. Inside was dark, soft earth, rich as chocolate cake.

She planted the button in a cracked cup and carried it home. By morning, a sprout curled up—not from the button, but beside it, from a seed hiding in the compost. Sorrel laughed so loudly neighbors opened their doors. Soon everyone brought peels, cups, and wishes to fill new planters. If you spot the tiny sprout above the world, keep Sorrel’s secret: joy grows best when it has room to be shared.
