🎨 How to color it

Color the knight’s armor in cool steel blue, the rose vines in deep green with crimson blooms, and the crescent moon in pale gold. Use sharp colored pencils for the armor’s small plates, vine thorns, and rose petals, then switch to broader strokes on the stone blocks and cape. Try a violet-to-navy night sky behind the towers so the pale moon and bright metal feel even more mysterious.

Every night, Garrick gave himself the same small challenge: count every sound between moonrise and midnight without missing one. Boots on flagstones, drip in the gutter, owl wing over the wall—he kept them all in his head like beads on a string, while the roses along the inner ward breathed their sharp green smell.

Until one night, after the eleventh bell, a twelfth note rang from the old rose gate. Because of that, Garrick left his post and followed the silver echo under the towers. Because of that, the thorn vines lifted as if listening, and a narrow door in the arch showed a line of blue light. “Who rings where no bell hangs?” he whispered.

At last he touched the cold latch, and the extra chime answered from inside his own armor, bright and soft as a star in a cup. The door opened to a tiny stair curling upward into moonlight, and curiosity ran ahead of him faster than fear. Next time you see the rose gate, count carefully—after owl wing and gutter drip, you may hear the twelfth note too.
