🎨 How to color it

Try silver gray for the knight’s armor, emerald green for the dragon’s scales, warm gold for the shield trim, and soft lavender for the castle towers. Use sharp colored pencils for the dragon’s small belly stripes and scale marks, then switch to broader strokes for the rolling hills and big clouds. Add a pale sunrise gradient behind the clouds so the knight’s shiny armor and the dragon’s grin feel extra bright.

Under the pale morning sun, Tavian pressed one last copper nail into the shield he had cut, sanded, and polished himself. The meadow smelled of wet grass and iron filings from his little field forge. Tap, tap, tap went his hammer, and every tap left a tiny bright dimple along the rim. He lifted the shield by its handle, proud of its weight in his palm, and walked the winding road to let the new metal meet the day.

Cloud shadows slid over the hills. Tavian tried holding the shield high, then low, then at a brave angle, listening to the soft clink of his homemade work against his armor. Near a bend lined with daisies, a small dragon rose from the grass with round, shining eyes. Instead of roaring, it tilted its head and hummed the exact notes of Tavian’s hammer taps. “You made a song,” the dragon said.

Tavian held the shield closer. The dimples were not just marks; they were a rhythm his hands had left behind. The dragon added a warm, flute-like whistle, and together they walked toward the castle flags, metal and breath making music over the meadow. Next time you see those little rim marks, can you hear the tap, tap, tap under the pale morning sun?
