The blue disc slipped from under the porch with a hiss-whizz, and Vega sprang after it before anyone could call her back. She only wanted one perfect catch, the kind that made the grass slap her paws and the fence blur into stripes. But just as she leaped, a tiny voice buzzed, “Not so fast, snow-nose!” The disc tipped over the lowest shrub and rolled through a gap Vega had never noticed, smelling of warm dust, clover, and sun-baked wood.
On the other side waited a beetle in a shiny green jacket, pushing the disc like a wagon wheel. “Borrowed it,” he said. “My roof blew off.” Vega gave one tail wag, then squeezed through the gap. Brambles tugged a pinch of fur from her side, and mud painted one paw dark, but curiosity pulled harder than either. The beetle’s hollow stump did need a roof, and the disc fit with a soft thunk.
Vega carried home something better: a secret map scratched under the disc, showing every hidden tunnel beneath the fence. Next time the grass slaps her paws and the fence blurs into stripes, see if you can guess which gap she’ll visit first.
