🎨 How to color it

Color the ladybug’s shell cherry red with bold black spots, make the scarf teal and cranberry, and give the pine branches deep evergreen needles with a bronze pinecone. Use sharp colored pencils for the scarf’s tiny stripes, dots, and zigzags, then switch to smoother strokes for the big round shell spots. Try a pale blue shadow under the snowdrifts and let the hanging ornament shine with alternating gold stars and icy blue bands.

Under the firs, Zella flicked her antennae through the cold, piney air and started her brand-new game: Snowflake Switch. Every time a flake landed on her scarf, she had to swap one tiny treasure for another before the wind said whoosh. A brown needle became a smooth pebble. A curled bark chip became a bit of silver thread. She raced between branches, leaving neat little surprises where sleepy winter bugs would find them.

The game grew faster. Plip on her scarf, switch! Puff on her shell, switch! Zella found a fallen holiday ornament, round and chilly, with star dents that held moonlight. Instead of keeping it for her scoreboard, she tucked her best pinecone beside it and whispered, “For whoever needs sparkle.”

Then the twist came softly: the ornament was not lost. It was a wish-bell for moths traveling by snowlight, and her pinecone made the perfect clapper. Far above, wings rustled like paper lanterns. Zella grinned and dashed on, giving away every prize before anyone could cheer. If you spot the starry bell by the pine needles, you’ll know where Snowflake Switch rang first.
