🎨 How to color it

Color the mermaid’s tail in emerald and teal, her shell crown in pearl pink, the fan shells in soft coral, and the Art Deco rays in pale gold. Use sharp colored pencils for the small tail scales, hair ribbons, bubbles, and stepped borders, saving broader marker fills for the large shell fans and wave panels. Try a deep-to-light blue gradient behind the gold rays so her pearl-pink crown feels as if it is glowing from a secret tide.

Far below the noon-bright water, where sunbeams fell in straight golden bars, Seren carried a plain pearl comb against her heart. She wanted to hear the Tide Hall answer her name before the moon bells rang, but every arch stayed silent as stone. The comb had belonged to no queen, no captain, no singer—only to the empty place beside her pillow, where it clicked softly at night.

Past fan-shaped shells and bubbles that smelled faintly of rain, Seren found a stair of black-and-white coral leading to a closed scallop throne. “Just one tooth,” she whispered, sliding the comb into a narrow groove at its base. The hall gave a low hum. Lines of light ran up the steps, across the waves, and into her tail, fitting every scale like a remembered song.

The throne opened, not for sitting, but for pointing homeward. From that hour on, each tide climbed and fell in little stair-steps, so every wandering mermaid could feel the pull of the place meant for her. Next time the water tugs at your toes, see if it is still carrying Seren’s plain pearl comb against its heart.
