🎨 How to color it

Layer the mermaid’s hair in deep teal, her shell top in pearly lavender, the crystal reefs in icy blue, and the small fish in flashes of gold. Use sharp colored pencils for the many triangles in her tail and fin, turning the page as needed so each tiny facet gets a clean edge. For a luminous twist, blend darker blues at the crystal bases and leave a few bubble circles nearly white, as if they caught underwater light.

The story behind this coloring page

Ianthe’s Facet Game — Every dusk, Ianthe trimmed slivers of mica from the prism reef and fitted them into little triangles on a slate board, listening to the soft clink of stone against shell. Read the full story →

Every dusk, Ianthe trimmed slivers of mica from the prism reef and fitted them into little triangles on a slate board, listening to the soft clink of stone against shell. She wanted a game no tide had ever carried in: one made by her own patient hands, where fish could score points by flashing through paths of light. Until one day, the moon-current rolled in early and lifted every piece at once.

Because of that, her careful board became a drifting constellation. Because of that, the reef fish began swimming through the scattered shards, and each turn of their bodies cast a new rule across the water—silver, violet, then green. Ianthe followed, palms gritty with mica dust, and set the pieces not back where they had been, but where the light wanted them.

At last the first round began without a board at all. The reef chimed, the bubbles shone like small moons, and Ianthe felt the quiet pride of a maker seeing her invention breathe. Every dusk after, she trimmed slivers of mica and listened for that soft clink of stone against shell.
