Before the fog lifted, Oren left his dry cedar hollow to find one smooth shell for the empty notch above his sleeping place. The shore smelled of salt and torn kelp; stones clicked under his paws as he searched the pools. A green wave slapped over his ankles and stole his favorite walking stick, the one polished by years of turning mussels. He stood still, feeling the cold climb through his fur, and heard a sound like thimbles ringing underwater.
In a crack between rocks, tiny tide-snails were humming inside their shells, stranded above the falling sea. “Carry us where the water can hear,” one piped. Oren lowered his broad muzzle, gathered them in a kelp leaf, and waded through foam that fizzed like soda. When he set them in the next pool, their song widened—silver, bubbling, too joyful to keep. He forgot the shelf. He carried the tune home in his chest, and by dusk every hollow, root, and wet stone near the cedar hollow was ringing with one smooth shell of sound.
