🎨 How to color it

Layer tangerine orange and lemon yellow through the citrus pulp, use deep emerald for the pointed leaves, and touch the small blossoms with creamy white and gold. Because the fruit segments and leaf veins are narrow, sharpen your pencils often and color from each rind inward to keep the stained-glass lines crisp. Try a sunrise gradient on the largest center slice, fading from grapefruit pink at the middle to golden yellow near the peel.

The glasshouse roof flashed like a sail as Cleo placed one fingertip on the center of a warm orange round and named her new game: Rind Dash. She would leap her marker from circle to wedge to curled leaf without touching the black lead lines, fast enough to make the whole grove feel like a ship leaving harbor. The air smelled sharp and bright, and every tiny tap of her bead clicked against the glass. “First jump,” she whispered, and her hand went before her breath did.

The route sped outward—over lemon moons, around seed-star centers, under leaves shaped like green oars. Cleo added rules as she moved: blossoms were harbors, tendrils were whirlpools, thick peels were safe bridges. Her courage stayed small, the size of one bead, but it kept rolling. Then the white blossoms began opening in the order she had passed them, each one releasing a speck of gold dust that settled into a second path.

Cleo laughed and followed it back, not racing now but listening. The game had not crossed the grove; the grove had joined the game, answering every brave little click beneath the roof that flashed like a sail.
