Before sunrise, when the grass still scratched silver against her ankles, Imani carried a cracked clay bead under her tongue and walked to the old waterhole. She wanted the pool to answer her herd’s water song, the way the elders said it used to. But the pool only made a dull plip-plip when her trunk touched it, and the acacia leaves hissed like they were keeping a secret.
Now, between us, that bead looked like nothing: brown, chipped, and small. But Imani’s mother had pressed it from the first mud of the dry season, and it tasted of dust, rain, and home. Imani lowered it into the water. The bead slipped from her trunk, sank through the rings, and cracked open with a tiny tok.
Up sprang seven colors, bending over the trees as if they had been waiting inside that bead all along. The pool hummed back every note of the herd’s song, low and round in Imani’s feet. Ever since, when an elephant touches that water gently, the rainbow remembers where it belongs—and if you follow the trunk to the ripples, you may catch the secret starting again.
